We asked Brett a few questions:

Best Advice for Home Owners?

A:  Avoid the mistake of not spending proper time or money on the design phase for all construction related projects on your property.  Good Design ALWAYS pays for itself.  Don’t be cheap otherwise you'll end up spending more in the long run.  Remember that quality work adds real value to your property.  The money being spent is an Investment.

Why do you Remodel Properties?

Number #1: Because I enjoy doing it.  Otherwise, I’d be doing something else.  I enjoy making things for people to enjoy.

Who should a homeowner call to have work done on their property?

I would get references from people you know that have ties to real estate and construction.  You should always get at least two bids/opinions.  Please don’t call every guy on the phonebook and on craigslist so you be 120% sure that you’re getting the cheapest price.  Do some homework and call the people that seem to be the most professional.  If you hire someone that doesn’t have insurance then be prepared to deal with the consequences of being open to liability and risk.  Ask for references and call them.  The more you can trust the person working on your house, then the more you can enjoy the whole process.

Why are these construction bids/bills so high?

Chances are that you aren’t getting ripped off.  “Could you do it for cheaper?”   “Would you be willing to work for less per hour. $XX an hour seems expensive”  When was the last time you took a pay cut at work?  The bottom line is that there are amazingly large hidden costs to being in the construction business.  Chances are that if you go with the lo-ball bid you’ll end up with a massive mess during and after the project is completed.  Get realistic bids from professionals and leave the hackjobs for some other sucker.

My budget is very limited.  How should I go about remodeling my house?

Depending on the numbers, maybe consider not doing anything at all.  If you can’t afford to do it right then consider saving your piggy bank for important things like unpredictable repairs and regular maintenance. Don’t start a job you can’t afford to finish.

It’s amazing what you can do with a few cans of paint to transform a house.  That’s where I’d put my money on a tiny budget.
